sein Buch mit Bildern zu schmücken. Bei der großen Wertschätzung, deren sich G. Cruikshank bei seinen Landsleuten erfreut[1], haben seine Illustrationen wesentlich dazu beigetragen, den Wert der Taylor’schen Übersetzung in deren Augen zu erhöhen. Sie wird deshalb jetzt mit fabelhaften Preisen bezahlt. Ist doch das erste der Brutonschen Exemplare in der Auktion vom 10. Juni 1897 mit 1680 Mark und das zweite mit 1340 Mark bezahlt worden. In einem neuen Kataloge von Pickering und Chatto: An illustrated Catalogue of old and rare books finde ich S. 81 zwei Exemplare zu £ 55 und 65 angesetzt.
Da es mir bei meinen bibliographischen Hülfsmitteln unmöglich ist, eine vollständige Liste der Originalausgaben der Übersetzung der Märchen von Taylor zu geben – sind sie doch nicht einmal in der Bibliothek des British Museum vollständig vorhanden[2] –, lasse ich hier das Katalog-Blatt abdrucken, auf dem die Brutonschen Exemplare verzeichnet waren. Wird doch dieser Katalog einem zukünftigen Bibliographen von Grimms Märchen leicht entgehen oder nur schwer auffindbar sein.

This is probably the finest copy extant of the most highly prized of all G. C’s. works. Vol. I is in the original illustrated boards. Vol. II is in the original cloth, with proof impressions of the plates on india paper – the ordinary copies of vol. II were issued in pink boards. Both vols. are wonderfully fresh and clean. An error on the vignette title of vol. I shows it to be of the earliest issue. The „a“ in Märchen is not modified but is printed Märchen, the error being corrected in the later issue of the first edition. It is unquestionably an earlier issue of vol. I than that in which the india plates appeared, as all the latter have the error corrected. The second state of the title page and also the title of the 1834 edition of vol. I are loosely inserted. Each vol. is enclosed in a brown morocco case, satin lined.

These vols. are in exceptionally fine condition, and vol. I is the earliest issue with the error on the vignette title.
No. 184 Grimm. German Popular Stories, vol. I only, second issue of first edition, with the error on title page corrected; ib. 1826.
In this later issue the list of plates on page 218 is omitted, and the note to the preface, page VII „We have another popular Song, etc.“ is placed first, whereas in the early issues it appears as the last note.
No. 185 Grimm. German Popular Stories, 2 vol. original cloth. I. Robins & Sherwood; Gilbert & Piper, 1834.
This edition was issued with transfers on stones from the original plate. The vols. are clean as when first issued.
