(Die Sutter-Biographie – im Original: Suter – ist zuerst 1868 als Feuilleton in der Basellandschaftlichen Zeitung erschienen. Der Bericht über Gäbi handelt von Gabriel Merz, einem Auswanderer aus dem Aargau und Kindheitsfreund Birmanns, über den Sutters Sohn Emil Viktor mit dem Autor korrespondiert, der im Kanton Baselland Vormund von Sutters Frau war. Gäbi Merz, inzwischen Pastor, war laut Sutters Sohn der einzige, der auch in der Krise zur Familie Sutter hielt.)
